Lil’58

an old friend

Developed in the mid 1990’s, this model, like the Evo, was revamped in 2010. The guitar borrows some elements from a memorable 1958 guitar that I repaired some years ago and has been designed around a modified ‘self tightening’ glued neck joint. An advancement of the traditional technique which greatly improves presence, responsiveness and strength. Necks are 25″ scale as standard and are typically maple, again to add a bit more attack than is usually found in guitars of this style, though other timbers can be used. Available in a wide range of woods and with many custom options to suit.

Worth every penny to have good working relationship with a top luthier,

and is far more pleasing than an ‘off-the-shelf’ guitar from a shop,

especially as a professional musician.

The Lil ’58 body on all models features a rear rib carve for improved comfort. Typical body woods include, swamp ash, alder and various mahogany. Both the flat top standard Lil’58 and the Lil’58 Artist (carved top) are available with, or without a figured top. A wrap around Gotoh 510 bridge is used as standard and for those who like a tremolo then that can be specified as part of a build. The flat top Lil’58 and the Lil’58 Artist both feature angled back headstocks, the tremolo version has a slightly narrower headstock to improve string movement over the nut.

A standard neck has a compound fingerboard radius of 10″-14″, similar to the Mojo but other radii can be chosen to suit. The Lil’58 comes with a pair of humbuckers fitted as standard with a volume, tone, and three way toggle switch for control. P90 and other pickup combinations such as HSS are available to suit individual tastes. Control layouts are available in several layout and a leaf switch can be specified if preferred.

Bodies

A standard Lil’58 features a flat top and the Lil’58 Artist is carved. Both are available with, or without, a figured top. A rear rib comfort carve is standard on both models.

Necks

Necks are glued in using a method that pulls the heel very tightly into the body for great strength and resonance. As with all my guitars, carbon fibre inserts and two way truss rods are standard.

Hardware

The Lil’58 is available with either a wrap around Gotoh 510 bridge or with a tremolo, typically the Gotoh VS100. The tremolo version has a slightly narrower headstock for improved string line.

Numerous material options are available, however, the trading of all rosewood species is currently controlled internationally by the relevant CITES treaty appendices. In the UK this means that instruments containing rosewood can only be traded within the EU. Therefore, rosewood is an available option on instruments destined for EU member countries only. Rocklite Sundari is a man-made and sustainable Indian Rosewood substitute.
