Custom Build

As a luthier I feel it is quite important to be able to offer a 100% bespoke build service. There is always an idea or a need for an instrument that isn’t necessarily commercially catered for. Customers approach me with unique designs or playing needs be it extended scales, double necks, unique shapes, 7 or even 8 strings. I can then work with the customer to achieve the required goals in a practical and effective manner.
Custom body designs can vary widely. Many of the truly custom instruments I build are based on a familiar design, particularly to the customer. The process begins by defining a basic specification and producing a design draft of the body and headstock. These can be provided by the customer or evolved from a customer led design brief. I draw heavily on my experiences as a luthier to reach a practical solution.  The relevant jigs and patterns are made once a design agreement has been reached.
In a sense the neck is not usually a problem as its form is defined by relatively few constraints, string spacing (nut and bridge), number of courses and scale length and range. Neck profiles can be specified or taken from a ‘favourite’ neck and can be bolt on, glued in, or through neck. I have done hybrid through necks where the neck section ends at the tremolo cavity and so does not travel all the way through the body. Headstocks can be designed to suit the body or theme of the instrument. Custom inlay work can be accommodated subject to design approval.
Like my standard guitars, hardware can be specified to suit, be it a simple choice of finish (gold, chrome, black etc) or a specific make and model that may be less commonly available. The same applies to electronics, be it custom wound pickups, non standard passive wiring and switching options or active circuitry. Any hardware choices are subject to availability.
