Ellen

Constructed following a ‘no stress’ build philosophy, the Ellen is the smallest of the acoustics I make. Fundamentally a slightly larger parlor style guitar, with a twelve fret to body construction, it reflects a sweetness and tonality so typical of a twelfth fret instrument. The Ellen has recently been redesigned to reflect the styling changes of the flagship Eden model, and a stock guitar is currently in production. The photos show the original instrument design, these will be updated when the new version is completed. 2011 is set to be a busy year, with the introduction of new designs and updates to existing models at the forefront.
Soundboards are selected for stiffness and weight and are commonly German or Italian spruce. A new modified X bracing pattern is used to optimize the changes in soundboard resonance resulting from the twelve fret construction. Braces are hand split from spruce billets, eliminating run-out and improving strength to weight ratio. The build process focuses on introducing no unnecessary stresses into the instrument, fundamental in producing an instrument that can resonate freely. Back and sides are chosen to emphasis the desired tonality.
The Ellen is built around a 635mm (25″) scale length as standard though other scales are available. I favor Brazilian Mahogany for necks and use a scarf joint for the headstock and a laminated heel for increased strength, rigidity and material efficiency. Fingerboards are commonly ebony and as an option, may be bound in the same wood as the fingerboard or, in a contrasting material. Necks are hand carved to suit the fit and feel of the customer and are available in a V profile if desired.
Bridges are hand carved in Ebony to fit the curved soundboard, and more often than not I use ebony bridge pins too. I prefer to use Gotoh 510 series tuners, they are well made, elegant and smooth in use. Pickups are not fitted as standard, currently I tend to fit Headway, Highlander or RMC. Please enquire about other systems.
