Essentially a fingerpickers guitar, The Eden, now in it’s third version, was the first acoustic I designed and built in 1994. Since it’s first incarnation developments include subtle changes in shape, bracing patterns and build techniques. When compared to the original design the two seem far removed and hardly related at all. It has proportions similar to that of an OM style guitar though perhaps a little narrower at the waiste. I am currently restyling my other models in the same manner as the Eden.
Various tonewoods are available for the body, dependant largely on the tonality expected of the instrument. Typically I build with two or three piece backs and make my own bindings and rosettes to work in harmony with the chosen woods. Soundboards are selected for stiffness and weight and are commonly German or Italian spruce. I hand split my brace material from spruce billets, which helps to achieve a desirable strength to weight ratio. The whole build process focuses on building no stresses into the instrument, sides for example are shaped to fit the natural form of a finished back or soundboard rather than forcefully pulling the plates into place. This is fundamental in producing an instrument that can resonate and hence speak, freely.
The Eden is built around a 648mm (25.5″) scale length as standard though other scales are available. I favour Brazilian Mahogany for necks and use a scarf joint for the headstock and a laminated heel for increased strength, rigidity and material efficiency. Fingerboards are commonly ebony and as an option, may be bound in the same wood as the fingerboard or, in a contrasting material. I hand carve my necks to suit the fit and feel of the customer.
Bridges are hand carved in Ebony to fit the soundboard, and more often than not I use ebony bridge pins too. I prefer to use Gotoh 510 series tuners, they are well made, elegant and smooth in use. Pickups are not fitted as standard, currently I tend to fit Headway, Highlander or RMC. Please enquire about other systems.
